AYS FIELD HOCKEY
Fall 2011 Field Hockey Registration Form
The Andover Youth Services fall field hockey program is open to Andover students in the 3rd through 8th grades. The program is broken down into 3 age groups.
7th and 8th Grade Middle School Teams
Over the last 6 years Andover has fielded two teams of 7th and 8th grade girls. These girls play a highly competitive schedule in the NEC/CAL and play other middle school teams from Marblehead, Swampscott, Lynnfield, Danvers and more. We also schedule games with local rivals North Andover. The girls will spend much of the season playing games and will have very few practices once their game schedule begins – much of the learning will take place through playing. Games are typically scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. This age group is limited to 40 girls.
5th and 6th Grade Field Hockey
The 5th and 6th grade program offers participants a balance between learning and competition. The girls will spend a good amount of time focusing on the basic rules and skills of field hockey. Once the girls have a good grasp on the basic concepts, they will scrimmage each other in preparation for a few games during the second half of the season. Games will be played against local town programs, including North Andover, North Reading and Chelmsford. This group typically meets two nights per week. We make every attempt to schedule the games on the same nights that they practice.
3rd and 4th Grade Field Hockey
Our 3rd and 4th grade group gives young participants the opportunity to try out field hockey at an age younger than most other towns in the area. This group will focus on the very basics of the sports and try to foster a love for the game. They will learn through fun drills and have a few inter squad scrimmages. This group typically meets two evenings per week.
Andover Invitational
The Andover Youth Services Field Hockey season ends each year with the Andover Invitational. This one day event is typically held on the first Saturday of November and offers our 5th and 6th and 7th and 8th grade teams the opportunity to play 4, 7 v. 7 games vs. towns from the Merrimack Valley, North Shore and New Hampshire.
Registration for the fall season will take place starting in late May and run through September. Remember, our 5th – 8th grade programs are limited in the numbers of registrations we can take. Please register early to assure a spot on a team. If you are new to field hockey and would like to be added to our email list, please email Tony Lombardi with the participants name and grade.
